The US Merchant Marine Academy is a couple of miles north of the Little Neck chapel. It rests on a bluff above above the Long Island Sound. The campus includes a former Gold Coast estate. Looking west toward the Bronx, it offers an exceptional view of the East River estuary, including Rikers Island. The east side of the Neck includes Jay Gatsby's view of Sands Point and Daisy's mansion, and the dock, and the green light . . .

 

We teach a class Wednesday evenings. During "Indoctrination" of the new Plebe candidates this summer we have conducted Sunday sacrament service in Mariner's Chapel. Candidates are not allowed to leave campus until early September.

Admission to the academy requires excellent academics and a congressional nomination. Educational costs are provided. One of the required four years is spent at sea. Graduates receive a military reserve commission. The Academy Regiment has served in all major conflicts since World War II, and carries a regimental battle standard. One of our students here is only 17. All are intelligent and gifted in multiple areas. We are enjoying their youthful energy and insights during our Sabbath morning discussions.

On our way to Kings Point each week, we pass these same children awaiting entrance to the village art center. Sometimes with, but usually without Sisters Chipman and Mortenson.
